The Sitka Sound Science Center (SSSC) is a growing 501(c)3 non-profit with a mission to increase the understanding and awareness of the aquatic and terrestrial ecosystems of Alaska. Its core purpose is to use science and education as a local business to strengthen and serve Sitka and southeast Alaska. The SSSC seeking a Finance Director to provide fiscal oversight of its $2MM budget and general management of all business operations

The Finance Director is responsible for the day to day management of SSSC transactions including accounts payable, accounts receivable, payroll, human resources, grants and contracts.
Duties include but are not limited to:

-Create, develop, and oversee annual organization budget and assist with creation and review of contract and grant budgets.
-Provide financial reports and guidance to the SSSC Board of Directors, the Executive Director, granting and contracting agencies, and other entities or individuals as requested.
-Ensure legal and regulatory compliance for all accounting and financial reporting functions including grants.
-Process biweekly payrolls for 15-35 employees.
-Process and pay invoices and maintain purchasing records.
-Produce invoices for all SSSC billable activities and reimbursable grants.
-Ensure paperwork for all new employees is accurately completed and maintain payroll and personnel files.
-All cash management activities including receipt, depositing, and recording of all funds and reconciling all accounts (bank, savings, and credit cards).
-Close out fiscal years and prepare/support annual audit process.
-Review organizational contracts.
-Create negotiated indirect rate proposal as often as annually.
-Maintain grant and contract records.
-Maintain and update the organizational Board Policy and Procedure Manual and the Employee Handbook.
-Work with executive staff and board on financial and HR policies.
-Supervise Administrative Assistant.
-Assist with financial functions of special events and projects as needed.
-Other duties as assigned.

-A strong working knowledge of finance, accounting, general business functions, and grant compliance is necessary.
-A bachelor's degree in finance, accounting or other related area and/or at least five years of appropriate work experience
-Must be proficient in QuickBooks and Microsoft Excel
-Must be able to work with and instruct people from a variety of abilities and backgrounds.
-Strong communication skills are necessary for this position.
